State Municipal Leagues

In 1924, state municipal leagues from across the country convened in Lawrence, Kansas, founding what is now known as the National League of Cities (NLC). John Stutz, the first Director of the American Municipal Association (now NLC), served from 1924 to 1931 and played a pivotal role in the League of Kansas Municipalities for 35 years, serving as the first Executive Director. Today, the 49 State Municipal Leagues operate as independent membership organizations, serving cities, towns, and villages, each with its own executive director, members, programs, and priorities. As founding members of NLC, the state leagues serve as essential partners, influencing federal policies, fostering local leadership, and promoting innovative solutions.
